WTU Editorial and Photography Guidelines

Whitetails Unlimited Magazineexamines the role of WTU in its national effort to promote the development of effective deer management programs, advocate change in the minds of anti-gun and anti-hunting individuals and groups, educate the public through specialized programs, and support research on the study of our ecology and its effect on the deer population throughout the United States.

Whitetails Unlimited Magazine is always looking for quality editorial material. If you’re an outdoor writer or photographer, and have expertise in subjects such as deer behavior, cervid biology, deer hunting, issues relating to conservation, food plots or the hunting tradition, and would like to have your material considered by Whitetails Unlimited Magazine, please read the following editorial guidelines.

Editorial Guidelines:

Whitetails Unlimited Magazine is published four times a year by WTU. The purpose of the magazine is to provide interesting articles to our members and highlight organizational happenings. We publish a wide range of hunting, environmental, educational, wildlife management, and how-to articles. Almost all features include wildlife topics, specifically the whitetailed deer. Hunting articles of most interest would include unique or unusual situations. This does not necessitate the taking of trophy animals, or the taking of any animals at all. The events surrounding the experience should not be overlooked.

Environmental-type articles related to wildlife are also considered. For example: how clear cutting a section of forest might lead to soil erosion, and at the same time enable new understory a chance to grow, improving food supplies for wildlife, including deer.

Educational topics considered include hunter safety, ethics or any method or undertaking that could improve not only the sport of deer hunting but the image of the sportsperson as well. Coverage of wildlife management topics is extensive and varied research, habitat needs or enhancement, new scientific findings, diseases and hunting as a management tool are just a few of the areas we would consider. Any technical information should be well-documented and thoroughly researched, but hard-core technical information should be left out of most articles. How-to articles are popular with our readers. Correct placement and safe use of tree stands, reading deer sign, proper use of hunting equipment, photography and hunt methodology are some examples. A fresh approach or unique treatment of a topic is preferable.

Queries:

It is best to query. Unsolicited manuscripts sometime work, but topics may have been already covered or assigned. We are willing to work with new writers and photographers. Initial contact should be by email to mrichard@whitetailsunlimited.com . Seasonal material should be queried at least six months in advance. All work is submitted on speculation. Indicate availability of photos, but do not submit photos until requested. Having high-quality images to accompany the story is a definite advantage.

Articles:

If sending unsolicited material, please also submit by email to mrichard@whitetailsunlimited.com . We will contact you after review. Allow 4-6 weeks for reply. We prefer previously unpublished work but do consider secondary use. Payment licenses first North American rights for print and electronic use by WTU in original form, exclusive for six months from publication date (actual use in publication may occur 2-12 months after acceptance); reuse pays 50% of first-run. Length of feature articles range from 1000-2000+ words. Feature articles with photos pay up to $500 and stories without photos pay up to $375. Payment is on acceptance.

Photography Guidelines:

Because our photographic needs vary greatly, we prefer to maintain a library of possible images on file for a time to be specified by each photographer. Submit your work by your website link or Dropbox to dneville@whitetailsunlimited.com or mail flash drives to PO Box 720, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235, Attn: Denise Neville. We will not use photos without properly compensating a photographer. We would rather receive photos that have not been overly edited or photoshopped; we prefer you let us edit the photos as needed. WTU pays $100 to $200 for images used, depending on published size. Cover photos pay $275. Reuse pays 50% of first-run. Payment is made on publication. We are happy to accept images and work with newer photographers, but work must be of very high quality. Please also contact dneville@whitetailsunlimited.com for more specific information or to discuss individual needs.
