It is that time of year when white-tailed deer are beginning to breed. This is commonly referred to as the rut and causes extremely erratic behavior from deer. Consequently, this also results in the majority of deer-vehicle collisions. Whitetails Unlimited urges drivers to be mindful of this while taking to the roads now through the end of November.

There are few things you can do to reduce the chances of a deer collision such as:

Be cautious when driving at dawn and dusk when deer are most active.

Use your high beams when possible.

Deer travel in groups; if you see one, chances are there are more nearby.

Do not rely on deer deterrent devices such as deer whistles or reflectors

Slow down!

It is also important to not swerve when a deer is in your path. Instead, brake firmly and honk your horn; swerving may cause a more severe collision.
